Library Resolution
On the last meeting of 2008 Student Senate voted in favor of a resolution, posted below, to express our support for opening the library on Sunday mornings at 9:00am instead of at Noon.
SGA President Wade Hauser presented this resolution to President David R. Anderson. He reviewed the proposal with careful consideration, but he, and many others, feel that Sunday mornings hold a special significance. President Anderson wrote in an official letter that it is his responsibility to "exercise an abundance of care for the deepest values of the College".
SGA accepted his decision respectfully and was aware that this is not an easy or simple issue. The discussion Senate had over this issue reflected the deeper cultural considerations that surround it.
This discussion has lead to other fruitful conversations including those about library hours during finals as well as the level of college services available during academic breaks. SGA will be integral to these conversations and invites input from any who are interested.
Below is SGA's full resolution:
Student Senate Resolution
Date: December 9, 2008
By: Wade Hauser, SGA President
Student Senate formally expresses our support for opening Rolvaag Library on Sunday mornings at 9:00am. Given the academic rigor of our institution, it would greatly benefit students to have the resources of the library accessible at that time.
There has been consistent and vocal support for changing library hours for many years and we believe this resolution aligns with the interest of the majority of the student body.
Student Senate is aware and deeply respectful of the broader culture at St. Olaf and the special significance of Sunday mornings. We feel enacting this proposal would not challenge St. Olaf’s culture, but reflect of our commitment to a thriving and multifaceted college community.

21st Century Media Fund!!!!
10.20.08
Announcing the 21st Century Media Fund
As a part of the transition away from the yearbook, SGA is now looking for new and innovative ideas in student media. SGA, working with the Dean of Students Office, has set aside $14,000 for establishing the next big thing(s) in St. Olaf media. We will be taking student applications and the possibilities are sure to be varied; perhaps an idea will emerge for a spectacular, modern day yearbook, or maybe an expanded St. Olaf Film Festival. It’s up to you!
The deadline for proposals will be December 1, 2008. A Student Senate subcommittee, an Olaf faculty member, and a representative from IIT will review the proposals.
For more information about the application process and the 21st Century Media Fund in general, please contact Wade Hauser, the SGA President, at hauser@stolaf.edu

Yearbook Press Release!
September 21, 2008
SGA Press Release ~ Cancellation of the Yearbook
College yearbooks are losing popularity nationwide. Though yearbooks have been part of the college tradition for many years, recent advances in technology have made the yearbook format stagnant. SGA is concerned with allocating resources in a way that benefits the most students and best contributes to a thriving campus community. SGA has traditionally spent approximately $14,000 a year on yearbooks and the Dean of Students Office has also contributed a large annual sum. The SGA Executive Committee unanimously decided that there is no longer sufficient student interest to validate this amount. There will be no yearbook for either 2007-2008 or 2008-2009. Previous yearbooks are available for purchase at www.stolaftickets.com and will also be available free of charge at Homecoming.
Greg Kneser, the Dean of Students, has graciously agreed to work with SGA to reallocate the money previously spent on the yearbook in new and innovative ways. We are developing a protocol to take proposals related to improving student media opportunities on campus. If future students are interested in re-establishing a yearbook at St. Olaf, they are encouraged deliver a proposal to be analyzed by the Student Senate and the Dean of Students.
Any questions about this decision may be directed to the SGA President: Wade Hauser, or to the Director of Student Activities: Kris Vatter.

Things going on in SGA
There are always approximately a million things going on in the many branches of SGA. Music Entertainment Committee (MEC) puts on a concert almost every weekend, Political Awareness Committee (PAC) is working to register voters and bring speakers to campus, Diversity Celebrations Committee (DCC) facilitates the many multiculutral celebrations that occur throughout the year, Student Alumni Association (SAA) connects current students with alumni, Board of Regents Student Committee represents students to the regents in charge of the future of the college, Student Organizations Committee (SOC) funds the more than 130 student orgs on campus, Volunteer Network (VN) connects Oles to great service opportunities, Student Activities Committee (SAC) brings fun events to campus including Homecoming and Prez Ball, and Senate is the branch that coordinates all of this action and address matters of student concern.
There are a lot of ways to get involved and a lot of resources SGA brings to you.
