On the last meeting of 2008 Student Senate voted in favor of a resolution, posted below, to express our support for opening the library on Sunday mornings at 9:00am instead of at Noon.
SGA President Wade Hauser presented this resolution to President David R. Anderson. He reviewed the proposal with careful consideration, but he, and many others, feel that Sunday mornings hold a special significance. President Anderson wrote in an official letter that it is his responsibility to "exercise an abundance of care for the deepest values of the College".
SGA accepted his decision respectfully and was aware that this is not an easy or simple issue. The discussion Senate had over this issue reflected the deeper cultural considerations that surround it.
This discussion has lead to other fruitful conversations including those about library hours during finals as well as the level of college services available during academic breaks. SGA will be integral to these conversations and invites input from any who are interested.
Below is SGA's full resolution:
Student Senate Resolution
Date: December 9, 2008
By: Wade Hauser, SGA President
Student Senate formally expresses our support for opening Rolvaag Library on Sunday mornings at 9:00am. Given the academic rigor of our institution, it would greatly benefit students to have the resources of the library accessible at that time.
There has been consistent and vocal support for changing library hours for many years and we believe this resolution aligns with the interest of the majority of the student body.
Student Senate is aware and deeply respectful of the broader culture at St. Olaf and the special significance of Sunday mornings. We feel enacting this proposal would not challenge St. Olaf’s culture, but reflect of our commitment to a thriving and multifaceted college community.
